At All Things SEN, we know that every child has the potential to learn and grow, regardless of their abilities or challenges. Our philosophy is that healthy learning takes place when there is a balance between thinking, feeling and doing: it involves the whole child, not just the head. As such we place as much emphasis on supporting and encouraging the life of feelings (through arts, music, rhythm, play and imagination) and the healthy development of the body (through movement exercises, games, and 'learning through doing') as we place on the development of the capacity for thinking.
There is no one-size-fits-all at The Quay. We offer a holistic, child-centered approach where what is unique to the learner, rather than being an obstacle, becomes the springboard to future success. We take the greatest care in 'reading the child' - their struggles, their insecurities, their abilities - and modify our approach accordingly. This does not mean stripping away structure and expectations; quite the opposite. A clear structure actually reduces anxiety if brought in the right way, and as such we believe our 'mini-school' model is the perfect approach to supporting learners to one day reintegrate into full time education (which is always our primary goal).
We work from the position that all learning is an adventure into the unknown, full of life, fun, mystery and humour. Ultimately though, our aim is to foster a deep interest in the given subject, an interest that comes from the child as a natural extension of their desire to explore, experiment and grow.
Our curriculum includes elements of English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Art, Music, SMSC, Independent living, Woodwork and Handwork, all delivered to best address the particular needs of the learner, and suitably concealed 'under the radar' where learning has become a source of anxiety.
